Sanctuary House
In February, 2006 the Society purchased the building that houses Sanctuary at 1705 Bay Avenue. It was something that the Board had been talking about for a few years and with the support of community organizations and businesses we were able to call the building our own on February 1, 2006.
There were several reasons for purchasing this great old building. We were previously paying rent for the Sanctuary space so purchasing the building immediately saved us $7,200.00 a year in rent. The apartments provide some income that offset the operating costs and add to the funding for Sanctuary.
The six apartments above the Sanctuary space further our contribution to the community by providing three apartments for at risk adults in the community. These might be financially or developmentally challenged adults who benefit from a secure, monitored environment at a reasonable rent.
Two of the apartments, a one bedroom and a two bedroom, are designated for use as Hospital Accommodation for people from outside the Greater Trail area who are accessing the Regional Hospital in Trail. There is currently no reasonably priced accommodation to meet this specific need. The charge for the use of these apartments is on a sliding scale based on the length of stay. The furnishing and equipping of these two apartments was made possible by a grant from the Vancouver Foundation.
One apartment has been reserved for the Building Manager who will admits patrons to the Hospital apartments in addition to her regular duties of keeping the building clean.
The six apartments have been painted throughout with new flooring and blinds. The hospital apartments have been fully furnished and equipped and we are encouraged by the constantly high level of useage of these apartments.
Our Board of Directors feels that Sanctuary House is another way that we can provide services to our community in several ways in addition to contributing to downtown revitalization.
